The Cheltenham Festival...the Lourdes of jump racing and, for many Irish, this is an annual pilgrimage that surpasses any other meeting in the racing calendar. It is not hard to understand why so many of our neighbours cross the Irish Sea for these four days of epic jumps racing action, and we will always welcome them all with open arms! The journey to the blessed shire of Gloucester is highly anticipated by many racing fans from all over the UK and Ireland. Cheltenham simply wouldn’t be the same without the added support of the Irish and their Celtic exuberance. In honour of the horses, jockeys, trainers, and racegoers who make the special journey religiously every March, the Festival hosts what is known as the Prestbury Cup, which is to celebrate the challenge between the number of Great Britain and Ireland Festival winners. After a total of 28 races, the Prestbury Cup is presented to a jockey or trainer from the confirmed winning country and interestingly, the cup itself is sealed with some hallowed Cheltenham turf, so that the winning country will take a little piece of Cheltenham home with them.
The Guinness Village, situated at the heart of the racecourse, is where many racegoers base themselves for the day with access to a number of bars, live music, and vast TV screens to show the live action from the course. An experience in itself, the Guinness Village provides a little bit of home from home with plenty of the black stuff to go around!
