The Epsom Derby 2022

It is that time of year when we can well and truly get our teeth stuck into some of the best flat racing action the season has to offer and with the sun set to shine over the suburbs of London this weekend, there is no better time to head to a racecourse and enjoy a day out with your family and friends.

This year's Derby will be a first outing for many as spectators are able to attend the races in limited numbers but sadly, that also means that many will miss out on the opportunity to attend what is now known as the Cazoo Derby under its new sponsorship.

The Epsom Derby makes up for two of the five British Classics and takes place annually at Epsom Racecourse, Surrrey, one of the most famous and challenging racetracks in the world.

The weekend action starts with Oaks Day, also known as Ladies Day. The feature race of the day is the Group 1 Cazoo Oaks which is for Fillies-only run over the same course and distance as the Coronation Cup and Derby. Alongside the QIPCO 1000 Guineas run at Newmarket and the Ladbrokes St Leger in York, these three races make up the fillies’ Triple Crown which was last won by Lester Piggott and the famous legend that was Nijinsky.

The second day of this two day meeting is the main attraction for many race fans, including Her Majesty the Queen, who attends this meeting every year as she does for Royal Ascot. The feature race is of course the Epsom Derby which is for colts and fillies and runs over a distance of 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 10 yards over the testing undulating track that rises over an equivalent height of Nelson’s Column. The prize money for winning such a test is £1.125million, this is Britain’s richest and most prestigious race that every jockey, trainer and owner wants to win.

Although we are not all able to make it to the Derby this year, there is no better time to look forward to this incredible day out on the first weekend in June next year. Here are a selection of some of the best ways to experience the Derby with Racingbreaks.com hotel and ticket packages.
