The Kentucky Derby is dubbed the greatest two minutes in sport, and this weekend it really lived up to this. For the first time in Kentucky Derby history, the race was taken away from the horse that crossed the line first. This controversial decision has even seen President Trump have an opinion! As you will see from the video, race favourite MAXIMUM SECURITY who crossed the line first,actually spooked during the race nearly taking down the whole field. The decision was then made to take the race away from him and give to the second place horse COUNTRY HOUSE, who was a massive outside chance at 65/1.
The decision led to massive division amongst the two connections and both sides make huge points The owner of MAXIMUM SECURITY said that the field was too large at 20, every derby has been run at 20 however all races in the US have a maximum of 14 runners, you could argue though that there has never been a problem before now.
Watching the race and the close up you can see that the horses legs literally go between one another. On another day, if this had not happened the whole field would have come down in seconds. This however was the horses fault and not the riders, the rider did everything he could to correct this and in many opinions is unfairly penalised for something that was not his fault and he did everything to correct. Trump tweeted “The Kentucky Derby decision was not a good one. It was a rough & tumble race on a wet and sloppy track, actually, a beautiful thing to watch. Only in these days of political correctness could such an overturn occur. The best horse did NOT win the Kentucky Derby - not even close!”
There of course will be an appeal from MAXIMUM SECURITY owners, but the likelihood of the decision being overturned is very low, but there is of course still a chance. The Kentucky Derby is one of the racing highlights of the year and always exudes an electric atmosphere. The weather this year was less than ideal as it didn’t just rain... it poured!
